As is the way of things, I find myself drawn back to the collection I started all those years ago, to first miniatures that got me into the hobby. The problem is that I'm quite a bit behind, the most recent book I have is the rule book that came with the Return of the King Boxed set, back when there were no set armies and everything was based entirely on events from the films. Now everything seems quite different and I'm unsure of where to begin again. I'd like build two armies out of what I have, a Gondorian one and a Mordor one. In order to do this, and play the game with the modern rules set what would I need to do? There are now two 25mm LotR games by GW - the skirmish game, which you've played, and War of the Ring, the mass battles version. You can get the latest rules for the skirmish game in the Mines of Moria box or the big hardcover rulebook; the only other thing you really need is the Legions of Middle Earth book for points values. The difference between the two rule sets is significant, although the stat lines are basically the same.

The 'One Rulebook' (the Blue hardcover Lord of the Rings SBG rulebook) or Mines of Moria have the most 'modern' rules - though the rules themselves are not vastly different to those found in the old Return of the King book. Some points values have gone up or down, and (for example) the Knights of Minas Tirith now have shields. I know, heartstopping. I would suggest scooting about ebay and see if you can find a cheap army box set for Gondor and/or Mordor.

Still you can have a nice, interesting looking army of plastic Rangers, plastic Knights of Dol Amroth, plastic Gondorian warriors ranged against plastic Orcs, Morannon Orcs and Easterlings. Legions of Middle Earth is not desperately useful: its a book of army lists, nothing more. The lists aren't exhaustive, they are really just example lists. Later sourcebooks such as Mordor and Gondor in Flames continue this tradition, though they have some new/revised profiles and background too. Be careful, buy strategically and plan your collection right and you can achieve your goal rather cheaply.

Then decide whether you want to invest some more. So, as a question: if I picked up an old copy of the Two Towers rulebook at Half Price, is there anything that I'm massively missing, rules wise? Because, I'm pretty sure I can get PDF's of a lot of the army list type stuff from GW's website. The 'One Rulebook' has the same siege rules, and rules for some more units. The GW site does have that stats to most of the new units (either on the model's page, or in PDF). Keep an eye out for special rules. Many of these are on the GW website in their PDF list.

The big difference is really in points values, and that can be solved with some of the Excel army builders out there. It's a bit of a pain in the neck, but between the builders, the Two Towers book and some time and effort, you can have some perfectly serviceable games.
