They always promote it as just Family Tree Builder, as if there is just one edition, that offers all features for free. There actually are two editions, Family Tree Builder Free and Family Tree Builder Premium. Most of the more interesting features they tout for Family Tree Builder are only available in Family Tree Builder Premium. Just as with most other desktop genealogy applications that have a free lite and paid full edition, there is just one download, that defaults to the free edition, and can be upgraded to the the full edition by paying for it.

In the case of MyHeritage Family Tree Builder you do not do so by buying a license for the full edition, you do so by buying a MyHeritage subscription. Every Family Tree Builder upgrade is free, you'll never have to pay for a new version. But you'll only have Family Tree Builder Premium for as long as you remain a subscriber.

When you stop being a MyHeritage subscriber, Family Tree Builder Premium reverts back to Family Tree Builder Free. Installation Family Tree Builder is a multilingual application and uses a multilingual installer.

The installer's first dialog box asks you pick an installation language from a drop-down list. The installer detected that I had version 7 installed, and offered to upgrade it.

There were no further prompts. About a minute later, the last panel of the setup wizard confirmed a succesful installation. The installer had created a desktop icon. That dialog box is a bit misleading, as the installation is not complete yet. As soon as you start Family Tree Builder 8, you'll see a notice a message about downloading additional components in the status bar. These additional components should come with the installer. User's Guide The first time you choose Help User's Guide, Family Tree Builder will prompt you for permission to download it.

You'll only want to do that when you have a good connection, not when you are using metered hotel Wi-Fi. Even on a good connection, being prompted to download it is an unnecessary annoyance. The download took about ten seconds, and then the guide opened in Adobe Reader. MyHeritage does not need to pop-up that dialog box every time you start Family Tree Builder Free, they can postpone it until you do something that actually requires your password, such as uploading your database to MyHeritage, but they will always prompt you anyway. The easiest way to get rid of this start-up dialog box is to log in; Family Tree Builder remembers your email address and password, so you don't have to keep entering it, and it can log you in automatically, every time you start it.

Pop-up dialogs Family Tree Builder may pop up several dialog boxes upon start-up. The first dialog box reminds you that you are using Family Tree Builder Free, and that MyHeritage would love you to upgrade to Family Tree Builder Premium. If your database is synced with your tree on MyHeritage, it won't prompt you to sync it. The easiest way to not get annoyed by a bunch of pop-ups every time you start Family Tree Builder is to give it your user credentials so it can log you in. Sync Synchronisation between your desktop Family Tree Builder database and your MyHeritage database is a major feature of Family Tree Builder. That synchronisation is not done by the main program, Family Tree Builder itself, but by Family Tree Sync, which has an icon the your Windows TaskBar. When you start Family Tree Builder, it starts Family Tree Sync.

If you exit Family Tree Builder, Family Tree Sync exits too. However, you do not really need to start Family Tree Builder to sync your database. You can start Family Tree Sync directly, and then use it to synchronise your databases. Just double-click FamilyTreePublisher.exe to start Family Tree Sync.

Family Tree Builder 8 still relies on GenBridge for import from third-party databases. Direct import Back in 2011, MyHeritage added direct import from various competing product to Family Tree Builder 5.1 (see Family Tree Builder 5.1 adds Direct Import. They added support for Personal Ancestral File (PAF), Family Tree Maker, Legacy Family Tree and The Master Genealogist (TMG). They did not do this by coding this themselves, but by licensing GenBridge from Wholly Genes. Late in 2014, Wholly Genes discontinued development and sales of TMG and GenBridge. It is very easy to check whether an application includes GenBridge; just look for a file named gbfunc.dll. Family Tree Builder 8 still includes that file. Family Tree Builder 8 still relies on GenBridge for import from third-party databases. When I imported a PAF file, I noticed that Family Tree Builder did not import the PAF file directly; it first converted the PAF file to a GEDCOM file, and then imported that GEDCOM file. The conversion from PAF to GEDCOM is done by a separate converter program, included with Family Tree Builder.
