Hello, This is my first post and unfortunately it's because I need some help with my wife's car. It's an '06 3.0D X5. The car lives outside.
Shared Knowledge 'BMW X5 - Outside Door Handles Not Working' 11 February 2014. Summary: most likely cause of exterior door handle failing to open door is failure of. 2008 BMW X5, 4.8i Sport. (and of course, exterior) manual door handles will not do anything either. Passenger Door Won't Open.
This morning I went to open the drivers door andwhen I pulled the handle it felt very stiff, but I assumed it was the cold making the door seal stick to the car. So I gave it a good pull and then the handle went slack. I am guessing there is a cable or some sort of linkage inside from the handles to the lock. So now I have a drivers door which is closed, and the external and internal handles do nothing. I can get in via the passenger door, but obviously that isnt ideal.
Has anyone had the same experience, or can anyone give me some advice on what needs fixing. I don't mind having a crack myself if it isnt too hard, or I could get the AA out and guide him to do what is needed. Thanks for any help you can give me on this. There is a metal bracket on the inside of the door that the handle attaches to, on it is a cable that goes down to the actual door lock latch. The cable could have come off and would just need clipping back in but it's more common (in my experience at least!) for the carrier itself to brake.
Normally the handle doesn't fully return and sits a bit proud of the door if this is the case. Also, does it open from the inside? If it does you might find it easier to open the windows by holding the unlock button on the remote and opening the drivers door that way. Climbling though the car every time you get in doesn't sound like fun!! Good luck, let us know how you get on!

Thanks for any help you can give me on this. You'll need to take the door card off then to get at the door latch. I'll give you fair warning, this won't be fun! Getting the doorcard off in itself isn't difficult but the problem will be doing it with the door closed as the seat will be in your way.
I normally take the rear bench seat out, then unbolt/unplug the drivers seat and lift it into the back. This will give you the room you'll need to get the door card and weather membrane off. Once you've done that have a wiggle of the levers on the door latch inside the door. You'll probably find one of them has gone tight and and is stopping the latch opening correctly. It's unlikely to be a problem with cables if neither handle works. It would be a good idea to disconnect the battery before you start because you'll have to take the side airbag off to do this and unless you're very careful you'll end up with the warning light on.
